- Who are the last two people you hired that worked out, and the last one that didn't? Patterns beat abstractions.
- What's non-negotiable versus nice-to-have? Push on every 'required' until the manager admits which ones are real.
That last question does the heavy lifting. Most job descriptions list ten requirements when three are real. Every fake requirement narrows your pool and invites a rejected shortlist later, so make the manager rank them out loud.
Nail down the parts people forget

Plan a quick recalibration after the first real batch of candidates. Bring three or four resumes, walk through why you ranked them the way you did, and let the manager correct your read. Ten minutes here saves a week of screening against a bar that has quietly moved.
